Q: Why are Coggins
tests required for horses to go to another state and what do they test for? A: The test is for a disease called Equine Infectious Anemia which is a contagious disease of horses that is very serious. The disease has almost been eradicated via the testing program; if a horse tests positive for it, the farm is quarantined and the horses that are affected are euthanized. By making sure that no affected horses are allowed to travel, we have reduced the incidence of the disease and made the world a safer place for your horse. There are many contagious diseases of people and animals that have been controlled by testing, and in some cases vaccination. We do not have a vaccine for EIA, and we rely on testing to keep the disease out of our horse population. Your cooperation is needed in order to make this program work. Be sure to consult your veterinarian regarding transport of your horse to any other state or country. Always obtain the required tests and paperwork.
