Q: What is agility training for dogs? A: If you can imagine a dog, running a complicated course of tunnels, teeter totters, jumps, turns, weaves, and more, that is agility. The dog starts by learning basic obedience. When the dog is proficient in obedience basics, he can start to learn some of the easier moves while on leash. Later, the leash will be removed and the dog will work at liberty (off-leash). I suggest that anyone who is interested find an agility demonstration or competition and check it out. It is very similar to watching a horse jumping a course, but without a rider! There are different classes for all sizes of dogs to compete against. Treats and word commands are allowed to entice the dogs, but, after you watch the first demonstration, you will hear the happy barking that tells you, hey, these dogs are having fun!
