Q: I was told my horse
needs a Selenium shot. Is that a routine procedure? Should my horse be tested first? What about the polo ponies that died from Selenium shots? A: The polo ponies were killed, sadly, by a compounded mixture that had so much more selenium than any product you can buy. The product that we use is called ESe and it is very safe. Many areas of the Northwest are deficient in Selenium, which is a vital trace mineral, so most of our animals that don't have a supplemental feed source may need a periodic injection. To be safe, your vet can test your horse's blood to see how much selenium they need, if they need it at all! Better safe than sorry; get them tested!
